Choosing a metal pushbutton switch is not only about selecting the right size.
The switch also needs to match the equipment's electrical circuit, panel design, operating environment, and expected frequency of use. For engineers and purchasing teams, checking these points before ordering can avoid installation problems and unnecessary changes during production.
Before selecting a metal push button switch, buyers and engineers should check the following specifications:
Mounting hole diameter: Confirm the panel cutout size and thread dimensions.
Panel thickness: Make sure the threaded body and nut can secure the switch properly.
Contact configuration: Select NO, NC, or changeover contacts according to the circuit.
Operating type: Choose momentary or latching operation.
Electrical rating: Check the maximum voltage and current for the intended load.
Protection rating: Select the required IP level for dust, moisture, or outdoor use.
Terminal type: Match the switch terminals with the assembly and wiring method.
Actuator and illumination: Consider button shape, LED voltage, color, and operating visibility.
Mechanical and electrical life: Confirm that the switch can withstand the expected number of operations.
1. Check the Mounting Hole Size
The first specification to confirm is the panel cut-out. Metal pushbutton switches are available in different sizes, such as 12mm, 16mm, 19mm, 22mm, and 25mm.
The mounting hole should match the switch specification and the existing panel design. For a new project, the switch size should be considered together with the available space behind the panel, wiring position, and surrounding components.
2. Select the Right Switching Function
The two common choices are momentary and latching.
A momentary switch operates while the button is pressed and returns to its normal state after release. It is commonly used for reset, trigger, start, and control inputs.
A latching switch changes state when pressed and remains in that state until it is pressed again. It can be used for power control or functions that need to remain on or off.
Choosing the wrong function can affect how the entire control circuit works, so this should be confirmed before purchasing.
3. Consider the Installation Environment
If the equipment may be exposed to water, dust, oil, or outdoor conditions, check the switch's IP rating. Waterproof metal pushbutton switches with ratings such as IP65 or IP67 are available for applications requiring additional protection.
Stainless steel housing can also be considered when corrosion resistance and regular mechanical use are important.
4. Check the Electrical Requirements
The switch must be suitable for the actual circuit. Check the rated voltage, maximum current, contact configuration, and terminal type before selection.
Pre-wired versions can be useful when the equipment requires a ready-to-connect switch. For PCB or panel assembly, the terminal and connection method should match the production process.
5. Choose the Head and Button Design
Flat, raised, and recessed heads provide different operating experiences. A raised head can be easier to locate by touch, while a flat head can provide a cleaner panel surface.
If the switch includes an LED, also check the LED color, voltage, symbol, and illumination type. A power symbol or ring LED can help operators identify the button's function.
6. Think About Long-Term Use
For industrial and commercial equipment, operating frequency and mechanical life are important. The switch should be tested under the actual operating conditions rather than selected only by appearance or price.
Panel thickness, rear clearance, and mounting-hole dimensions should be checked against the approved product drawing before ordering. Incorrect dimensions can lead to loose mounting, insufficient thread engagement, or interference with components behind the panel.
