PCB tact switch features and benefits

The PCB tact switch is a small push button switch which is widely used for electromechanical applications. It’s an integral part of the typical PCB design for any product or device. Tact switches are designed for short operational life and provide both a tactile (physical) and audio feedback when pressed. This feature ensures user confirmation for tactile feedback capacitive switches (i.e., ones that require a finger to tap the surface in order to provide functionality).

The benefits of using this type of switch are numerous. Firstly, a tact switch is a very inexpensive and convenient way to control various functions in a PCB design. By using PCB tact switches one can easily and quickly add additional control signals without needing to create extra connections associated with those signals elsewhere. This saves time and effort, and ultimately the money.

The small size of a PCB tact switch also provides an advantage with regard to playability. Tact switch actuation distance is very small and highly reliable when compared to other types of switches, allowing the switches to be used in limited space such as in children’s toys or hand held devices. In addition, due to the small size of these switches, they can be easily integrated into small, portable devices in which space is at a premium.

Furthermore, a PCB tact switch requires less power compared to other types of switches and is, therefore, much more reliable. They are also capable of sustaining more wear, tear and abuse over time as compared to other types of switches which may reduce their life expectancy.

Tact switches are also highly efficient and offer unparalleled accuracy and responsiveness. As the switch needs to move only a millimetre or so in order for it to be activated and deactivated, this ensures that it does not consume excessive power, compared to other types of switches.

In addition, the availability of different contact materials allow the tact switch to be installed in a wide range of corrosive or humidity environments, or when dealing with higher currents. This can be achieved by selecting the right plating and contact materials when designing the PCB.

Overall, the PCB tact switch is a very effective and reliable switch solution that can be used in various applications. The tactile feedback, small size, low power requirement, durability, and corrosion resistance make it a great choice for any PCB design.
